Bicycle Built for Two

Sometimes I marvel at how Voyageur and I have worked in tandem to help out Mom.  Our personalities at times couldn't be more different.  I'm a morning person, waking up early for Voyageur is 8am, or is it 9?  When she is frustrated, she sleeps.  I run, go out dancing or go for a really long hike.  She is an introvert, I'm clearly not.

Our similarities are almost as if we are twins.  We both think/learn visually.  We both write - poetry, prose, stories.  We have an absolute passion for justice.  We are loyal (sometimes ridiculously so) and don't know what it means to give up.

Sometimes I think of this dementia journey with Mom as a tandem bike ride.  When we were kids, we had a tandem bike - the person in the front steers and peddles, the person in the back peddles (sometimes like crazy) and is along for the ride.  At times, the dementia is steering the bike and both Voyageur and I are peddling, and sometimes we gotta back peddle.  Mom always likes to think she is the one steering the bike.  We have found that things move smoothest with Voyageur steering the bike, me peddling and Mom in the basket on the front.

Well, I think it's time to stop the bike and get an ice cream :) Mine will be a double scoop of coffee please.

YO, Voyageur, WAKE UP!
